Finishing

Fold bootie with wrong sides together, and using the invisible seam for garter stitch, sew together back of bootie.

Bottom edges: With wrong sides together, whipstitch cast-on edges together.

Buttons: On the outside of the bootie, opposite the strap side, attach button with sewing needle and matching thread (used doubled), stitching through the holes in the button (or over a button shank) several times. Weave sewing thread through several stitches to secure. (Note: Small buttons may pose a choking hazard, so be sure to stitch securely to bootie.)

Picot Edging:  With Color B (white is nice) yarn and size F crochet hook, attach yarn at base of strap with sl st.  Work around front edge of bootie toward toe:  Ch 3, sl st in same stitch, sc in next st, *sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in same st, sc in next st* repeat around front edge of bootie, ending at other side where button is.  Finish and weave in ends.

Rosebuds:  With Color C yarn, thread large eye needle so that yarn is doubled.  Secure carefully on wrong side of picot edging, and work a French knot in first 3-chain loop, securing to middle chain.  Continue to work a French knot in every other 3-chain loop, weaving yarn on wrong side of  picot edging between French knots so that contrasting color does not show on outside of bootie.  Repeat with Color D yarn in remaining 3-chain loops of picot so that rosebuds are alternating in color.  Weave in all yarn ends on wrong side.

Weave in all yarn ends to wrong side of work.

If your buttonholes are not identical, it's best to choose buttons that fit the smallest buttonhole. You can always tighten up the larger buttonholes with scrap yarn and a needle.

Continue to knit each row, until hat measures 7-1/2” from beg.

Remove marker, BO 10 st loosely.  K18, place those stitches on a holder, BO 24 st loosely, K18, BO 10 st, cut yarn.  Join yarn and knit 18 st that remain on needles as follows:  (Knit back and forth)

Row 1:  Sl1, K2Tog, K to rem 3 st, SSK, K1. (16)

Row 2:  Purl

Rows 3 – 8:  (Repeat Rows 1 and 2) 3X.  (10)

Row 9:  Knit

Row 10:  Purl

Pick up color B with size I crochet hook and sc in each stitch around entire cap, including ear flaps.

Using color B, make a 3” pom pom and using tail at top of hat, attach to top as you weave in yarn tail from beginning.
